The Cause

Down’s Syndrome Association: A charity close to my heart

The Down’s Syndrome Association supports people with Down’s syndrome, along with their families and carers. Their services include tailored advice, information, education, and employment support

Having grown up with a brother who has Down's syndrome, I have experienced both the joys and challenges of having a family member with special needs.

I have also witnessed first-hand the fantastic work that the DSA does to support individuals with Down's syndrome and their families throughout their lives.

Furthermore, while traveling in the ex-Soviet country of Georgia a few years ago, a chance encounter introduced me to the Down’s syndrome community there. In a country where educational support for special needs is virtually non-existent, parents shared with me how invaluable the free online educational resources provided by organizations like the DSA are to them. This highlights that, while the DSA is a UK-based charity, its impact is also global in the digital age.

The Challenge

1. World Record Attempts 

   I am aiming to set four unsupported north-to-south country cycling world records, beginning with Portugal over Easter. 

   Portugal 

   The attempt begins in Cevide, a charming rural town at the northernmost tip of Portugal. The journey ends 700 km (with over 7,000 meters of cumulative climbing) away in the holiday town of Faro in the south.  

   I will be updating details of subsequent attempts as I go.

2. TCR  - I will then be taking part in the TCR, an annual, self-supported, ultra-distance cycling race across Europe, widely regarded as one of the toughest endurance races in the world. This year’s race begins in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain and ends approximately 5,000 km away in Constanța, Romania, taking riders over the Alps and Pyrenees. (https://www.lostdot.cc/tcr)
